Working with Lion Brand Yarn

I am a crochet designer

If you’re anything like me, this blog post peaked your interest because you’re probably wondering what makes me special — to now have the luxury of working with a large company, such as Lion Brand.

Just know, like many of you, I have been on the slow train. As I said in my previous post, One of AKate was born in 2013, which wasn’t even when my craft first began. It’s now 2020!

… did you do the math?!

It took me SEVEN years to finally be able to build my brand and have the confidence to do what many never get the opportunity to do.

TAKE THE RISK OR LOSE THE CHANCE

The past couple of years, I have spent a lot of time networking and building relationships in the community. One of the annual events I gain a lot of good from is OUR MAKER LIFE.

Lion brand representatives
At OML Calgary, I got to meet some Lion Brand representatives.

There, they offered packets for wholesale information & expressed the desire to work with all of us creatives. If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I made a full head-to-toe yarnie outfit — YouTube video here — my dungarees were actually made out of Lion Brand Jeans; Needless to say, i was proud to flaunt them.

WHAT’S THE SECRET?

I almost missed this opportunity because I let time pass without reaching out after the event. Why? Because I didn’t think i was special or stood out enough amongst all the talent. My brand is unique and I claim it; yet, for some reason, I did not allow myself to believe the opportunity was meant for me.

Let my experience be another lesson for you:

  • Master your craft
  • Build your brand
  • Believe in yourself
  • Put yourself out there
  • Apply for what you want
  • Never stop learning

THE WORLD IS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

Technology has made our life so much easier. There are more resources than we can consume these days:

Stitch Away Stress

Craft Yarn Council

Craft Yarn Council is the go-to standard. They are a MUST FOLLOW! Hint, hint: they are also the standard that Lion Brand goes by.

Subscribe to Lion Brand’s newsletter. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and all their socials. Tag them in your makes. SHOW THEM HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM.

It’s so worth building those relationships. Then, when you apply for yarn support or submit designs, they might already recognize you, which could help their decision.

WHAT’S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN . . .

They say no? So, try again, Being told no does not make you a failure. There are multiple ways to work with Lion Brand outside of getting your own kit.

Knot in back

“Don’t get your knickers in a knot. Nothing is solved and you just end up walking funny.

They also offer yarn support. I actually got to try some of their new Low Tide yarn while making one of those long time hoarded patterns I own.
